The Hopis are descendants of the Anasazi, a prehistoric Indian people. They have lived at their present site for about 1,000 years. The Coronado expedition visited them in 1540 and the Spanish occupied the region in 1598, but they were driven out within a century. When a Christian missionary returned and converted many persons in one pueblo, it was destroyed and all its inhabitants killed by other Hopis. The Mesas called First mesa, Second mesa and third mesa are the order of Spanish invading the hopi.Hopi Reservation is located in the high deserts of northeastern Arizona and is landlocked by the Navajo Reservation. The total land area is 1.5 million acres and the elevation ranges between 4,700 feet in the valley floors to 7,800 feet atop the northern reaches of the mesas. Temperatures range from an average daily maximum of 87°F in summer to an average daily minimum of 18°F in winter.
